INNOVATION GROUPS
Regional collaborative projects
in interdisciplinary exchange
REGULUS innovation groups
Currently, ten regional REGULUS innovation groups conduct interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research across Germany.
The different REGULUS innovation groups, made up of various institutions and practice partners, focus on the practicality and future impact of their work and results.
The targeted promotion of innovation processes is a key feature that is significantly supported by the connection of the different REGULUS innovation groups.

Development of multifunctional forests on disturbed spruce areas: The large-scale clearing of dead forests is neither ecologically nor economically sensible or socially acceptable. ResEt-Fi is investigating management strategies in Thuringia that include deadwood concepts as an integral part of the development of multifunctional forests.

Innovation network for the material use of waste wood at regional level: The valuable resource of wood is being lost too quickly through the predominantly energetic use of waste wood. ISAR develops new business models for innovative material waste wood utilization paths in order to extend existing value chains and create new ones.

Revitalized floodplain forests, their dynamics and resilience are being researched in the project "A-DUR". The main focus is on how changes in land use impact nature and society along the river Mittlere Isar. Based on this, evidence-based recommendations are developed for managing floodplain forests located close to the city. The results will also be incorporated into educational programs.

Strategies for maintaining forest ecosystem services in the face of climate change: Climate risks and their consequences pose major challenges for forestry and society. The aim is to maintain the services provided by the forest ecosystem. With this objective in mind, the joint project WaldlabOR in the Upper Rhine region is working on the development of practicable concepts for forest management.
The REGULUS innovation group URBORETUM examines the role of urban forests in specific functional and living areas of a city. The focus is on developing climate-resilient urban forests which provide a range of ecosystem services for their citizens of densely populated areas.

Digital twins to understand the development of forests: As part of the project, an IT system is being developed in the Brandenburg region to record vegetation stocks. AI processes and digital analysis tools are being used to automatically determine information about stands and make it available to decision-makers.

Development of an adaptive forest and wood management system for the region of Brandenburg-Berlin, using Scots pine as a case study. The focus is on a regional value chain that conserves ecosystems and resources - from forest management to wood supply to wood processing. Within the transdisciplinary network "InnoForum Wald-Holz", research needs are identified and addressed in collaboration with practitioners, with results shared with the public.
